| China to further boost regional economies |
At the annual government work report delivered at the opening of this year's NPC session, Premier Wen Jiabao highlighted the need to coordinate development across regional economies. Wen Jiabao also stressed the need for different regions to come up with plans suited to their own particular growth patterns. With strong backing from the central government, NPC deputies are looking for ways to turn this into real benefits for regional economies.
The southernmost province of Hainan has been in the spotlight since the State Council unveiled plans to transform the island into a top tourist destination by 2020. However, Hainan faces problems with uneven development in its economy. Local deputies believe that focusing on building up the transport sector could mean a more even spread of benefits from economic growth.
Ji Mingjiang, NPC Deputy, Mayor of Dongfang City, Hainan Province, said, "We are calling for more government support for building airports in the west of the island, so as to boost tourism in that area. By doing so, other related industries will also boom. Now our priority is to ease the pressure from a huge influx of tourists."
Lack of balance is also a challenge for other provinces. Cities in the province excluded from regional development plans, have seen relatively slow progress in their economies. NPC deputies say these cities should also get their fair share of opportunities.
Li Hongming, NPC Deputy, Secretary, Suzhou City Committee of the CPC, said, "The city of Suzhou lies just in between two economic centers which have seen considerable growth. But should also get our chance because we have rich natural resources and abundant labor."
While northeastern Heilongjiang Province aims to adopt different development strategies to capitalize on regional strengths.
Xu Zhaojun, NPC Deputy, Secretary, Yichun City Committee of the CPC, said, "Heilongjiang Province is very large. We can not develop local economies in the same pattern. We must think about the real situation. For example, The city of Daqing has rich crude oil resources, Jiamusi is good for agricultural development, while Yichun is better for the forestry industry. We will also pay attention to protecting forest areas."
China has been busy stepping up efforts to boost regional economies. Last year saw the central government issue 11 regional economic development plans. While so far this year plans have been approved to transform Hainan Province into a hub for travel and trade. In addition, a plan titled "Anhui Demonstration Zone for Industrial Relocation into cities along Yangtze River" has also been approved. |
